Superintendent’s Update 1/28/2022

On Tuesday, Katie Greer came to speak to our 7, 8, 9, and 10th-grade students. She also hosted an evening session for parents. Katie specializes in internet safety, specifically social media. I found it interesting to feel the energy in the room change when Kaite showed a slide that stated, “If someone published a book with all of the comments you left on social media, would you be proud?” She continued by letting kids know that she did “a little search of Hamilton-Wenham social media accounts last night.” Then she displayed a list of the things that students post publicly including personal pictures, birthdates, family information, etc. As an example, she talked about posting birthdays. Katie explained to students that someone could open a credit card with the information they were posting as public. Fascinating and scary stuff.

On a less serious note, I was observing a kindergarten class with Ms. Clifford and Ms. Butler on Thursday. The teacher took a moment to introduce us, to tell the students what our roles were and stated that Ms. Butler wears lots of hats. After a 10 second pause, one of the students turned back, looked at Ms. Butler, and said, “You’re not wearing a hat”.  To which, the adults laughed behind our masks.

School Committee Elections

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District Committee is seeking candidates for election to membership on the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School Committee. The number of members elected in 2022 shall be three (3) members; each for a term of three (3) years. Nomination papers for prospective candidates were available beginning on Monday, January 10, 2022, at their respective Town Clerk’s Office to ensure that the “the candidate” is a registered voter before gathering the signatures of at least 40 registered voters from either the Towns of Hamilton and/or Wenham. It is highly recommended you obtain 50-60 signatures to ensure at least 40 are certified. The nomination papers must be returned on or before 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 17, 2022.

The Annual Town Election of Hamilton and Wenham will be held Thursday, April 7, 2022, from 7:00 AM-8:00 PM, respectively in the Towns of Hamilton and Wenham.

Half Way!

Most of the Kindergarten classes celebrate the 100th day of school in some way shape or form. I can’t wait to see what they do! This week marks the crossing of the halfway point of the school year (90th day). At the MS and HS, the students have started the second semester and both principals report a smooth transition. It is also the last second semester in school together for our seniors. Time flies!

School Committee Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (D, E, I, B) Training

I’d like to thank the school committee members who spent two and a half hours with me, Stacy Bucyk, and the DEIB trainer, Regis Shields in a training that is directly connected to the journey our district is embarking upon to learn more about DEIB in our district. They were able to experience the training that our staff and faculty were involved in earlier in the year.

ILAS Program working on Safe Serve Certification

The high school IL/AS students are going to participate in ServSafe training this Monday and Friday after school. The goal is to have the students ServSafe certified so they can work within the cafeteria on select days and outside in a restaurant if that is the path they choose. This is a credential they can keep with them for five years! Wendy Ng has been incredibly supportive and helpful with the program and will be talking to the students during the Monday school day about certification.

HS Accreditation

As you may know, the HS continues to work on its accreditation. Assistant Principal Kirsten Losee and math teacher Kevin Beckwith are the co-chairs of the decennial report committee. They have assembled teams of faculty members that are responding to NEASC’s feedback from the Fall 2019 visit. In March, a team from the New England Association of School and Colleges (NEAS&C) will spend 4 days at the HS to examine the work the HS staff and faculty have been doing to prepare for the visit.

  • The primary purpose of the visit will be to hold schools accountable for improvement and growth on their identified priorities – not necessarily improvement or alignment with every Principle in the Standards.
  • The visit will be organized largely based on observing and discussing the school’s Priority Areas for Growth.
  • The visiting team will employ a growth mindset in meetings, interactions, and debriefs with school personnel.
  • The spirit of the visit will be based on trust, inquiry, collaboration, and support.
  • The visiting team will place a large emphasis on observing learning and teaching practices through classroom observations and talking to teachers and students about their work.

A final report will be delivered to us from NEAS&C by the end of the school year.

New At-Home Covid Testing Program

Students who have enrolled to receive free at-home tests will receive their two-pack of rapid at-home tests on Thursday 2/3. The intent is for your student to test before coming to school on Friday. The two-pack is designed to be used for Friday 2/4 and Friday 2/11. If you have not signed up and are interested you can complete the form linked here. If you have questions, please contact Thomas Geary – t.geary@hwschools.net or Rebecca LeBlanc – r.leblanc@hwschools.net.

Safety Training

Both the MS and HS will be revisiting safety training protocols with their staff and students over the next few weeks. You should receive an email from the building principal with more details.

Literacy and MTSS

Professional study groups continue as the focus of our PD this month, with classroom teachers studying books or online study modules related to the science of reading. Mid-year literacy assessments are taking place through January 28. Grade level data meetings are scheduled for the first two weeks of February.

DESE released a small competitive grant in mid-December for districts to obtain core reading curriculum materials. We have put forth an application for K-2 resources and will be reviewing possible choices with our MTSS Literacy Leadership Group.

The MTSS Literacy Leadership Group was scheduled to meet on January 12 but was postponed in order to prioritize teacher contact with students during the peak of absences. The leadership group will convene instead on February 16.

Welcoming Jenn Hogan-Caley to the HWRSD:

Jenn joined the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District as a district-wide Behavior Specialist this fall and brings over 23 years of Prek-12 Special Education experience to the district. She lives on the North Shore with her lacrosse-loving family and two, 100 lb. English labradors named Stella and Mabel. Jenn is thrilled to be a part of the Hamilton-Wenham school community. Favorite quote: “Calm seas never made a skilled sailor”.

Stiiiiiill looking for help

We have positions available in the areas of classroom support, math tutoring, food service, HR, IT, speech pathology, special education, substitute nurses, and classroom substitutes.

Snow?

Looks like lots of snow coming our way. Since it isn’t a school day, I have been trying to decide if I should still get up early and practice canceling school. From what I can tell, I would have nailed this one if it was a school day.

Seriously, I hope everyone fares well with this storm. I still remember being sent to the corner store ( I was 10 yrs. old) in the middle of the Blizzard of ‘78 by my mother who thought it was no big deal to have her kids walk to the store to get her something (unnecessary). Good thing we had those cool snorkel jackets that zipped up around your face. As strange as it was at the time, it is still a great memory for me and my brothers today. Hopefully, our kids have great memories of big storms too.

Superintendent’s Update 1/21/2022

This week I had the pleasure of spending lots of time at Cutler Elementary. I learned a number of interesting things. In the cafe, I got an in-depth description of how a student would save one of his peers with the “heimrick rover”. After thinking this through for a second, I realized he was talking about the Heimlich Maneuver to save someone from choking. The second lesson was a demonstration of the proper way to eat a chicken patty if you use ketchup. First, you squirt one packet of ketchup onto your tray, then take the chicken patty out of the bun. You need to scoop the ketchup up with the chicken patty while trying not to let any ketchup fall off. If you want to break the chicken patty in half, you can do that too.

As I made my way through the schools this week I started to realize how naturally our teachers integrate social-emotional learning into their classes. In kindergarten, students start the day with a simple “Good Morning, (student name) and the next student returns the good morning and passes it along to another student until everyone has said good morning to someone by name.

In middle school, I noticed a different technique, but it was clearly helping kids to improve their social skill set. In the theatre class at the middle school, students were giving feedback to other students after they performed. This feedback was in a sandwich format. Students would say what they liked, follow with a suggestion or idea for improvement and then end their commentary with something positive.  While these little moments in the days of our students may seem trivial, it is clear to me that throughout the years in our school system, students have many opportunities to add a number of tools to improve their social-emotional skills.

Covid Testing Program Changes

This week, MA DESE and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced a new program designed to enhance covid testing in schools while also reducing the load our nurses have been carrying by stopping both the test and stay program and contact tracing in schools. This program is free to staff and families who sign up and consent to be part of the at-home testing. There is no requirement to sign up.

This evening you will receive an email that will give a more specific description of the program and will have a link to sign up for access to free rapid covid tests for your child on a bi-weekly basis. Once every two weeks, students and staff who sign-up will be given two covid tests. One test is to be used at home each week. If you agree to use the tests, there is also an expectation that you report positive results to the school nurse. Please note that pooled testing will still continue. The at-home tests will be in addition to the pooled testing.

DEIB Audit Status Update:

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Audit Committee has been working closely with Equity Journey Partners gathering data and information across the district and from the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education. The next steps will include surveying all stakeholders across the Hamilton-Wenham community this winter and then creating stakeholder focus groups and forums in the early spring. Be on the lookout for invites!

How Good Are The Lunches At The HS?

Last Tuesday night, our Food Services Director, Wendy Ng sent me a screenshot of an email that she received from a student at the HS.

“Hey Ms. Ng, just wanted to let you know how amazing lunch was today. I doubled up and got the Belgian waffle with eggs and the chicken sandwich and hash brown, and I’m in literal food nirvana. I put the egg and the hash brown on the sandwich and dabbed some ketchup on it and it was spectacular. I’m writing this as I eat the waffle and it sure smells good. I wanted to say A++ on lunch today and thank you for all your hard work and running the show that is the foodservice at HW.”

Looks like Ms. Ng has a fan!

Superintendent’s Update 1/14/2022

On Monday, I visited every school. The energy in our schools always gives me a recharge. As you know, times have been difficult with the teacher and student absences and I am grateful for everyone who stepped up at each of our schools to help out. On Wednesday, I was able to walk through many classes at the HS. Mr. Menegoni and I walked through 10 classes to look at instruction and more specifically inclusive practices designed to help all students in our MS/HS classes.

Reminder…

Monday, January 17, 2022, is Martin Luthert King Jr. Day, there is no school.

Did you know?

The gym floor at the MS/HS complex was resurfaced during the December break? Each year we reseal the floor twice, once during break and once during the month of July. This keeps the playing surface in great shape and cuts down on athletes sliding.

A Visit With The Gender & Sexualities Alliance (GSA)

On Tuesday afternoon I was fortunate to attend a meeting of the MS/HS Gender & Sexualities Alliance (GSA) with our Director of Student Services, Stacy Bucyk. While the students had some great questions for us, it was important to connect with them, hear their thoughts, and discuss future meetings and opportunities. The students are interested in finding a place for community art, like a mural space. They were also interested in Title IX and how it “worked”. Ms. Bucyk is our Title IX Coordinator and walked the students through the process of what to do when something happens. Title IX is specific to discrimination based on sex. Title IX states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance”. Although our time together was short, we had an excellent discussion and I look forward to continuing to work with the group in the future.

Internet Safety Assembly

On January 26th we will have Katie Greer join us for individual grade level assemblies for grades 7, 8, 9, and 10. Katie will be talking with students about internet safety. Superintendent’s Update 1/7/2021

Happy New Year everyone!

Our first week back has been a doozy.  We seem to all know someone who has or has recently had covid.  I can now add myself to the list of positive covid cases as well.  Fortunately, most cases are mild, including mine. I’ll be back on Monday!  Can’t wait!

Sorry, this one update came out later than usual, I was shoveling snow.

School Committee Meeting Cancelled

The school committee meeting that was scheduled on Thursday, January 6, 2022, had to be canceled.  The issue stemmed from the website being down.  Our district had declared with the Attorney Generals Office that the district website is the primary point for posting our agendas. Once the website is down and not accessible for more than 6 hours, meetings posted during the downtime must be rescheduled and reposted. The meeting has been reposted on the websites of both towns and emailed to everyone.  It is scheduled for Monday, January 10, 2022, at 7:00 PM.

The website

As noted above, the hwschools.net site has been down since late Wednesday afternoon. Our provider, Finalsite has suffered a ransomware attack and is still working to get sites back up and running.  Ours is partially back, but not complete. We were promised to be up and running on Friday morning, but we are still waiting. Frontline hosts many area school system websites.

Covid Cases are Up

As expected, our Covid-19 cases are up dramatically.  This week, our pooled tests resulted in the most ever positive pools.  If your child is not feeling well, even if you think they only have a cold, please keep them home and have them tested.  Many of the cases we are seeing are people who thought “it was just a cold”.

Autism-Disability Outreach Program Presentation

The Autism-Disability Outreach Program is an initiative of the Hamilton Police Department that offers members of our community to voluntarily and confidentially identify individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder or other disability who live, work or attend school in our community. The purpose of the program is to promote communication and ensure that consistently high levels of public safety services are available to those who may require special considerations.

Join Detective Joe Achadinha, Tuesday, January 18 at 6 pm on Zoom to learn more about this community program. This event will be hosted by the HW Special Education Parent Action Committee, SEPAC.  Once the link is available, I will send it out to everyone.

Speaking of Covid-19

If your child tests positive, the guidelines are as follows: An individual who tests positive must be out of school for at least 5 days.  The day an individual tests positive is considered day 0.  The next day is day 1, etc. Day 5 is the last day of quarantine.  An individual can return to school on day six as long as they have no fever or symptoms.

Community School Budget Presentation and Q&A:

As stated earlier in the year,  I want the budget process to be transparent. To this end, I would like to invite parents/staff to a budget overview of next year’s budget (FY23) on January 11, 2022, at the HS in the auditorium.  Vincent Leone and I will present an overview of the budget and take questions.

Yes, we are still looking for help!

We have positions available in the areas of classroom support, math tutoring, food service, HR, IT, speech pathology, special education, substitute nurses, and classroom substitutes.

Welcoming Lauren Gorse to the HWRSD:

Lauren joined the Cutler School Faculty as a 3rd Grade teacher this fall. She started her teaching career at Winthrop School as a student teacher, and then as a graduate fellow in the role of a TA before moving over to Cutler. Outside of school, Lauren enjoys crafting, going to the beach, and spending time with family around the fire pit. She is thrilled she is able to continue working in the district and looks forward to getting to know everyone in the Hamilton Wenham community and helping students grow! Lauren’s favorite quote is  “always stay humble and kind”.

Happy snow day!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
